Srinagar, Mar 13 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir administration has provided more than 5000 specially-fitted scooties to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the past six years. As per official data accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a total of 5,439 specially-fitted scooties have been provided to disabled persons from 2019 to 2024. Additionally, 546 more scooties will be distributed in 2025 to achieve full saturation. It also reads, the Social Welfare Department is currently running two schools for visually impaired children in Jammu and one school for speech and hearing-impaired children in Srinagar, with 176 students enrolled. Moreover, it also states that the “Halfway Home” in Jammu is now fully functional, while a similar facility is being established in Ganderbal to support individuals with mental health issues. The data also reveals, the Unique Disability ID (UDID) initiative has achieved 92.88 percent coverage in J&K, with 1,91,193 UDID cards generated, placing J&K at 6th rank in the country. Furthermore, it states two Composite Regional Centres (CRCs), one in Jammu and another in Srinagar, are operational and have provided services to 2,022 disabled persons. Additionally, as a boost to employment it states, over 550 disabled persons have secured jobs in the government sector due to changes in the reservation policy and the notification of posts suitable for various benchmark disabilities—(KNO)
